By deploying many
innovative HA
features in software,
we do not pass on
additional hardware
cost to our customers.

Customer network
remains available
even during software
upgrades.
When FMS software upgrade is performed, the network connections are bypassed to the base operating system,
Linux®, and the network connections are not interrupted.

Restartable Intelligent Modules and Constant Self Monitoring

For high availability, the system has been designed to be made up of restartable processes, which are constantly
monitored through heartbeat mechanism. If a system component ever fails, it is restarted automatically and
system continues to operate normally.

Graceful Handling of Extreme Load Conditions

In the network deployments, if the FMS-Enterprise Gateway is subjected to extreme load conditions (load far
beyond the system specifications), it gracefully suspends non-essential functionality and continues to operate to
carry on essential functionality so that network stays available. Graceful handling of extreme conditions, which
arise due to beyond-specifications use of the system, forms basic building block of FMS System's high
availability architecture.

Based on Proven Solid Platform

FMS-Enterprise Gateway is based on open source based Linux® operating system which is extensively deployed
and highly reliable and stable platform for building and deploying carrier-class systems. Being based on reliable
platform provides solid foundation to build a highly available system.

Thoroughly Tested System for Reliability and Scalability

FMS-Enterprise Gateway has been tested to scale and perform beyond its specifications to provide the best value
for our customers. It has been hardened through long term stress and reliability testing.

Carrier Class High Availability in Hardware AND Software

FMS System has been designed from start for carrier class high availability of the network. The high
availability is built into both software and hardware
independently, which makes FMS System truly carrier
class. This gives complete peace of mind to all of our customers as business critical network functionality
remains fully available.

Hardware High Availability Based on Port Bypass Advanced Functionality
In case of catastrophic event like power failure, complete system failure, hard disc crash or any similar
failure, FMS System switches to port bypass based hardware high availability mechanism. This causes the
Gigabit Ethernet cable passing through the system (as shown in figure above) to be short circuited to become
a single wire. All network traffic continues uninterrupted without being affected by system failure and
network remains fully available so that business critical applications are not affected.

On top of hardware based high availability, far more sophisticated and advanced software based high
availability is incorporated into the system, as described below.

Software High Availability: System Upgrades without Service Interruptions

FMS-Enterprise Gateway is based on true bump-in-the-wire architecture. By strictly sticking to this
architecture, FMS is able to cleanly bypass connection state and pick them right back up after an upgrade is
performed. This allows the network to be 100% available during system upgrades, without causing any
service interruptions.
During normal system operation, network traffic is watched by FMS-Enterprise Gateway but to the external
users it remains invisible because of its bump-in-the-wire operating mode.
